[ At some point during the first day of the Coiled Hearts festival, Jester's device will ping and alert her to the fact that she has one (1) new message. Opening it will reveal a photo attachment of a woman in an octopus print dress and the following message: ]
That's a really pretty name!! I bet you're pretty cool, too.
I know, right?? Well normally I have this spell that you can talk to people really far away with, but I can only say 25 words and I have to know what the person looks like. And their name. And other stuff, I guess.
Technically I've talked to people I've never met over that too, but like — I haven't really met them yet? So you're the first, technically.
Oooooh— through the skies??? On a ship?! Me and my friends traveled together on a ship for a pretty long time too — we were like, actual pirates and stuff.
But that was in the sea. How did the ship end up in the sky?!
But no, I'm afraid I've never been a very good artist. But I'll see if my friend Lyria ever tried to draw the sights we saw. She keeps a very detailed journal.
Well, it's a little bit more like a letter, I guess, so that the Traveler can read about what we did that day and stuff. Except I don't have to send it out 'cause he's a god. [ Jester. ]
Well, technically, he's kind of like my best friend, technically. And I'm his favorite I'm pretty sure? So like, if I ask him for a lot of things he gives it to me because he likes me so much.
But a lot of people don't know about him yet! So I help him by telling people about him, 'cause he's pretty cool. I dunno if he'd like hearing a ton of prayers, though. He mostly just likes sketches and pranks and stuff. [ She's basically trying to say he's cooler than your average benevolent god, obviously. ]
He is super fun!! And really powerful too — he taught me all the spells I know!! [ As for the other, much more serious question— ]
I hope so? I mean like, he used to come and talk to me all the time but then I started adventuring so it's hard for him to find time when I'm like, all by myself, and stuff.
But he promised me he's watching whenever he can, so — maybe he can see me now?
I guess if he can't I can show him all my sketches when I'm back home, maybe. [ The alternative of never returning isn't really an option she'd like to consider, right now ( or ever ). ]
Wombats apparently have an extremely strong instinct to burrow. They live in burrows with extensive tunnels and chambers which can be up to 30m long. But, amazingly, the pouches to hold their young are backward facing. This is to protect them from dirt and debris as the mother digs.
Ooooooooooh, that's kind of really cool. It'd suck a lot if the baby had to get a face full of dirt every time their mama wanted to go dig a hole, huh?
Oh!! Did you know that ants can carry things that are like, one hundred times their weight at least?? I saw one once that was carrying a giant piece of bread that ten times bigger than it. Up the stairs!!!
[ This doesn't sound like Vietnam at all? But the recipient seems eager to continue, and Siegfried always welcomes the opportunity to learn new things. ]
Yes, it's a very clever evolution, I think.
I've always been impressed by the weight ants are capable of carrying, but one hundred times their size? It makes one grateful that they're minuscule— any larger, and they'd be monstrous.
Speaking of ants, I recall something interesting I read in a book. Ants don't have ears, perse. Rather than hearing using auditory canals, they have sensors on their feet that process the vibrations of the ground. Of course, their antenna help them get around their surroundings, too.
Whoa, so they like, hear with their feet?? [ Jester no ]
Ants are super creepy, now that I think about it. If they really did get bigger I think they could totally take over like — everything. But if they were only a little bit bigger you could keep them as pets! If you wanted to, I guess. [ Do ants like going for walks, question of the hour. ]
I guess they'd make pretty cool pets, huh? They could help carry all your stuff!! But also I already have Nugget and Sprinkles and I feel like Fjord might freak out a lot if I got a pet ant.
You should get one though!! If you can. I'll come visit!
That's a pretty difficult question. I've encountered many interesting creatures in my travels.
Hmm. I know. One of my favorite experiences has been seeing and taking down a Gallardoza in the flesh. They are creatures so formidable, that legend says the head of a pack of gallardozas in the mountains where I encountered them was able to take down a dragon. Not only are fearsome, but a certain cut of their meat known as "chateaubrilliant" is so delicious and rare, most gourmets can only dream of tasting it during their lifetime.
Ooooooh — we fought a dragon once!! But I think he said he was a little bit of a young dragon that was waiting to get older. Though I guess he kind of attacked us and now he might be dead? [ But the thing also nearly killed her before she just barely managed to get away, so— ]
I saw some pretty cool animals, but my friend — Beau — once got a really grumpy owl. Like, grumpier than she is, and she's pretty grumpy sometimes? The point is, I don't think I've ever seen an animal be that grumpy before ever. His name was Professor Thaddeus! He was a really cool owl, though.
[ We're not talking about the Manticore or the Merrows or even the gnolls, we're talking about a fucking owl ( also, emphasis on "was". ) ]
Twiggy — our friend — said he died but we kinda like, escaped, before we could see him. She was the last one to leave? So he might be dead, but also he was really strong.
Right!! He was suuuuper grumpy like, all the time. I don't think he liked anyone. Don't tell Beau, but when they stood beside each other their grumpiness multiplied. [ JESTER... ]
He like... kind of flew off while we were fighting some bad guys, maybe? We like, called for him, and he never came back. :(
She's another friend of mine!! She's a really cool monk that's like super badass and stuff?? I think you'd really like her if you meet her, even if she's a little bit grumpy.
But I guess she's not really here right now. [ ... ... ...
Anyway. ] That's true!! Except we kind of traveled like... really up north? Like, really, really up north. So I don't think we'll ever really find him again.
[ Tbh her voice is probably too loud for the volume level he expected on his phone rip ] Did you know you like, miss spelled every word in that sentence except maybe four of them??
Anyway I have no idea what you said!! You should have called me, probably.
[ nope, guess who's stubbornly going to try and keep texting: ]
GClaiing is su
[ ...
fine. he'll switch to voice, but he's not going to like it. ]
It was a quick question! Calling's such a fucking pain. [ still, he'll get right into it: ] Some genius opened a late-night donut stand for the summer, do you want one?
[ Oh in that case — time to switch, time to give Shuu shit for being bad at texting— ]
Oh shit— why didn't you say something earlier!! Let's go!!!! I'll meet you outside, okay? [ Rustling in the background, as if she knows where they're meeting.
[ actually, yeah. that sounds fine to him too. there aren't enough braincells on this call to notice the logistical problems. it's fine. hearing jester's affirmation is enough for him to just straight up end the call since, like, that's all he really needed??
Hello Jester, itโs Fish! It was lovely seeing you at Obscuria. I hope youโre doing well, though.
[ Theyโve seen Mollyโs wounds, and they got injured too. But theyโre better now! And thereโs something more interesting they want to ask about. ]
I just wanted to pick your brain about something... Iโve been hunting around for somewhere new to live. Would you like to help?
[If she doesn't show within the next minute, he's evacuating the premises. Too many people he knows live here, stacked atop one another in these box buildings with naught but wood and stone between them. Wasn't anyone bothered by the lack of air? A little grass? Not to mention taking stairs just to get outside.
Inuyasha knocks sharply. He flinches when he hears footsteps, that galumphing trot down the stairs. He can't place the gait, but it doesn't matter. They don't enter the hallway, carrying on their merry way.
He scowls and knocks again, shifting the bakery box to one side and tugging up his pants. Was it just him or had the jeans stretched some? They used to fit snug at his hips, he could swear it.]

How do I look?
[ Hm. ]
no subject
I guess you might not the dress if you don't like octopus, but I think you look really good in it. [ Nodding emoji. ]
Oh!! What do you think about this? [ Here's a blue head of hair with an octopus headband, Rosetta. ]
no subject
Rosetta is not quite die but she is very charmed by this enthusiastic reply. Also she still doesn't know this is Jester. ]
It's very cute and suits you wonderfully.
But did you die your hair, Lyria? It looks darker than usual.
no subject
... Who's Lyria? [ She could have gone on with the gag, but— ]
WHY DID I WRITE DIE, I HATE MYSELF!!!!!!
She's a dear friend of mine that I've been traveling with recently. Her hair is a beautiful blue, just like yours.
But since your name probably isn't Lyria, what is it?
dw i wish to die as well
I'm Jester!! Who are you?
rip both of us
[ i hate this ]
My name is Rosetta. It's a pleasure to meet you, Jester, though I usually don't speak to someone for the first time over something like this.

But a spell like that sounds very handy! You could talk to your friends whenever you needed to. Do you know many other spells too?
[ i'm sorry jay ]
no subject
I know tons. I'm pretty powerful, you know. [ i did it i avoided tl;dring about spells ]
no subject
You'll have to show me some more of them one day.
[ but an interesting fact about her, hm? ]
I used to travel through the skies on a ship with my friends before I arrived here. Is that interesting enough?
no subject
Oooooh— through the skies??? On a ship?! Me and my friends traveled together on a ship for a pretty long time too — we were like, actual pirates and stuff.
But that was in the sea. How did the ship end up in the sky?!

It's a beautiful sight. I wish you could see it for yourself.

That does sound really pretty... did you ever like, draw it?? [ Let her see, let her see ]

I'm glad you asked.

Oh, I wouldn't mind a pet-sized ant. I'm not much for pets myself, but the idea sounds interesting.
Is this still Sen, by the way?
no subject
You should get one though!! If you can. I'll come visit!
Who's Sen?
no subject
Ah, Sen is my friend, who I intended to message.
... Do you even know who you're speaking to?
no subject
Someone who really likes talking about wombats? And other animals? Who do you think you're speaking to?
no subject
I don't know who I'm speaking to.

You seem to be very interested in animals.

Oh, that does sound pretty interesting. I wonder what sort of things could upset an owl enough that it would be perpetually angry.
Was?

I see. I hope they're alright.
